🍻Drinking cultures around the world
There was an uproar on social media when Qatar announced, two days before the event, that alcohol wouldn’t be sold in the World Cup stadiums. I understand they banned it because it goes against the country’s cultural and religious beliefs, which is absolutely fine with me.
🤔As a result, I was curious to learn about different drinking cultures around the world. Some are highlighted in this article. Here are a few that caught my eye.
😲When clinking glasses with someone in Germany, it's important to maintain eye contact. You will be cursed with seven years of bad sex if you do not.
In Japan, how you drink can show respect or disdain for your elders. When drinking with coworkers, turn your head away from managers and senior staff members to avoid offending them.
Drinking times are different around the world. Brits think it's strange to start drinking before midday and usually limit their alcoholic beverages to the evening. Other countries, such as Iceland and the Czech Republic, exhibit a similar trend. Icelandic drinkers stay out late, with nights out frequently beginning after midnight.
☀️Other countries are more open to drinking during the day. Alcoholic beverages are commonly served with lunch in Spain, France, Russia, and Germany. It's also a German tradition to go out for a drink on Sunday mornings, known as Frühschoppen.
Alcohol sales in Iceland are strictly regulated. Alcohol is not available in supermarkets or other grocery stores. Aside from bars and restaurants, the only place to buy alcohol is from the government-owned vinbudin. Because there are only 48 of these stores in the entire country, you must plan ahead if you want to serve alcohol at your event.
🚨It's also worth noting that drinking is illegal in some countries around the world and they include the Kingdom of Brunei, Saudi Arabia, and parts of the United Arab Emirates and India.
For those who are unfamiliar, these two are the icons of modern soccer. What's interesting is that they weren't in the same room for the photo, implying that this is some high-level photoshop.
💡Quote of the week
For an individual focused on deep work, the implication is that you should identify a small number of ambitious outcomes to pursue with your deep work hours. The general exhortation to “spend more time working deeply” doesn’t spark a lot of enthusiasm. To instead have a specific goal that would return tangible and substantial professional benefits will generate a steadier stream of enthusiasm.

That is it for today.
